General Information
Dry or unproductive cough raises no sputum and is often scratchy to the throat. This kind of cough may cause hoarseness or loss of voice. A dry cough is often induced by the inhalation of small food particles or irritant fumes. Cigarette smoke - either active or passive and temperature change are also cited as contributing factors.
This kind of cough may result from a recent viral infection, flu, or head cold.
Signs and Symptoms
Compared to productive cough, dry cough presents no symptoms other than the cough itself, with the patient often feeling well, without chest congestion and breathing impairment.
Advice to the Customers
Drink at least 8 glasses of water a day regularly. Stay away from cold, dry environments.
Prescription Advice
- Instruct the patient on the medication and how to use it properly, i.e. name of the medication, frequency of dosage, etc.
- In the case of exacerbation despite treatment, instruct the patient to consult a physician immediately
- Advise the patient on the possible adverse effects of some cough preparations, especially those containing opiate derivatives.
- Discuss advice to the customers thoroughly for more information on the prevention and management of dry cough.
